Black & White Landscapes

I’ve just spent a couple of hours going back through my collection of photos to find a few ‘candidates’ shot in landscape format. I’m a fan of black & white photography thanks to a college course a few years back which involved shooting lots of B&W film.

This evening I felt the urge to play with some images, particularly ‘landscape/cityscape’ photographs taken in landscape orientation. All but one of these images were converted to B&W in photoshop and then various global curves and masked curves were applied to taste (mine).

I didn’t spend that long on each image, rather than strive to perfect an image I wanted to get a better feel for what kind of images work in B&W. Next time I go out with the camera I will hopefully be more able to recognise when a black and white treatment will suit the particular image I’m trying to make.

Thanks for looking, comments are welcome.

Recognise a few Photos – they look great – after trying to convert a few photos myself to b+w and them not being terribly succesful- I appreciate what you’ve done – deffinetly takes some talent

[...] Have been playing around with converting some photos to black and white to try to find out what works. Take a look on my photography blog at http://www.chrismarshphotography.com/blog/2011/07/black-white-landscapes/ [...]
